On nights that she forgot to latch the window, Risa lay awake for fear of the screeching, the hisses. The nightmares were feeding at the vineyard again.

Everyone thought that I was weird for watching the comic shop lizard instead of reading the comics, but the stories the lizard told me were so much more interesting.

Lana remembered the needles, the amber, the sap collected from last year's trees. She remembered to stir it just once and pour it in the snow. She grabbed a fallen branch and wrote her question with its end. "Oh please," Lana thought to herself, please answer." She feared she was the only one who remembered the method of asking, that the pines could no longer listen.

This hall was impossible. She had walked for days, and yet still was facing north, still surrounded by lockers, posters tacked on locked classroom doors. (She knew they were locked; she'd tried each one.)

The harvest was lost that year, so she sacrificed only the remnants of wheat that she kept, shaped, as a hat. Hopefully it would be enough to ensure the waters rise.

None of the fruit ever thawed. His pineapples grew, but they grew still frozen, only edible as a sort of popsicle.
