So, gmail won't sign me into AIM as of late and I decide that it is a perfect time to get Trillian. Apparently the Trillian people think all mac users love those silly little speech bubbles and that is the only display option for Trillian for mac. IChat just doesn't want to let me send AIM messages for some reason (no idea) and the AIM program I downloaded gives me an error message everytime I try to log in. It seems to be related to "you've logged in too much" and yet I haven't really been logging in all that often. At least trillian lets me chat.

Help? I'm getting really frustrated here.

In an only-slightly-related problem, gmail won't display the part of replies where you type your reply in if I'm using safari. It works in google chrome.

ETA: Adium seems to work. Thanks [livejournal.com profile] zehlyi! Any other suggestions are appreciated as well.

And in the never ending saga of IM programs hate me, gmail chat decided to start working with AIM again and Adium sits on my computer waiting for the day when it decides not to again.

My biased self wants to say your problem is probably caused by using a Mac. But my helpful side suggests trying to use Pidgin (http://www.pidgin.im/download/mac/) I've only ever used it on windows and ubuntu, so I do not know how the mac version works, but I like using it for aim.

I actually can get into the Mac is bad, Microsoft and Google are ok rant, but that is hours and hours of me ranting so I'll spare you my techo-elitism.

Yup, was going to recommend Adium. It speaks pretty much every protocol ever and, even in spite of having a bazillion themes, actually manages to look pretty good. (For most programs, theming is a substitute for actually having a decent UI in the first place.)

This is exactly what I usually, say, but last time I did someone pointed out that Adium is better on Mac than Pidgin is, even according to the Pidgin people.
