We learned about atlatl teams at various colleges in archaeology and prehistory today. I then announced that we should start one to my class in general and got statements of assent. Our professor said that this has been brought up before and it usually goes along quite nicely until people notice their lack of free time in which to throw spears.

This afternoon I walked to the library. I got stacks of books (including Nisi Shawl's Filter House, China Miéville's The City and the City, and Ursula K. LeGuin's Changing Planes). I've been curled up in my room with A Sudden Wild Magic, one of the few Diana Wynne Jones that I haven't yet read.

Anthro club has one, and some darts. Or at least, they got one 3 years ago, presumably they still have it. Might want to talk to them about borrowing it?

The atlatl is one of Theresa's favorite implements, not that she goes around throwing spears herself.

I could, though. I have. It was fun. I was best at it of the various people trying them out at that reconstruction village that time.

I could hang one up by the blowgun, and take it out on special occasions....

Hell yeah China Miéville!
Also spear throwing. That sounds pretty cool.
But.
Yeah.
China Miéville! Second best author ever. <3

If you started one and I started one, we could have a league of atlatl teams from schools that begin with B. (Random aside: I was talking to someone had a friend at your college and I astonished her when I said I did too.)

Coincidentially, I just got A Sudden Wild Magic out from the library as well for the same reason. Out of curiosity, do you have the copy with the bookflap that has the phrase 'conquer the mighty fortress through internal dissension, psychological sabotage and kamikaze sex'?

I forgot the name as soon as I didn't recognize it, but I'll her the next time I see her.

That phrase caught my attention when I was deciding which of the DWJ books that I hadn't read yet to get.
