Jun. 24th, 2009 02:03 pmCurrently, my three favorite books are all short story collections of a sort. They all maintain a calm overtone, though the events can involve turmoil. These books are Kalpa Imperial by Angélica Gorodischer, In the Forest of Forgetting by Theodora Goss, and Portable Childhoods by Ellen Klages. They all have delicate every day magic and a sort of poetic feeling. I particularly enjoy the story "Concerning the Unchecked Growth of Cities" from Kalpa Imperial as it traces a city, and its interactions with the people who live there, throughout its existence. In In the Forest of Forgetting, I enjoy "Lessons with Miss Gray" and the delicate magic that occurs there as well as the knowledge the girls gain about their lives. In Portable Childhoods it is difficult to pick just one story but "Travel Agency" invokes memories of visits to my aunt and uncle's and staying in their loft and reading their books. "Time Gypsy" is my other favorite.
These books are all best accompanied by a gentle herbal tea (like Evening in Missoula) or by cinnamon hard candies and chocolate.
ETA: Things that currently make me happy: seas and shipwrecks and rusted pocket watches (like yours, Indy) and water and the ocean and ancient cities and imaginary cities and stone walls and cathedrals and cinnamon and spices and chocolate and tea and honey.
